BEFORE STARTING: This is the first time I write a post like this so, if there are any errors, be sure to tell me. HOW TO INSTALL VIRTUALBOX GUEST ADDITIONS IN LONGHORN BETAS This guide will show you how to correctly install the VirtualBox Guest additions without running in any errors NOTE: HERE I'M USING BUILD 4051 x86, BUT AT THE END I LEFT A LIST OF ALL THE BUILD I'VE TRIED AND I'LL CONSTANTLY UPDATE IT EVERY TIME I TRY A NEW ONE sorry, I moved to VMWare. STEP 0: The problem Now, if you try to install the Guest Additions as normal, the first issue is that, if you try to select to install Direct3D support, the Windows Vista dialog will show which isn't good. If you try to proceed with the setup, at some point you'll get an error.
So, let's install it the right way. STEP 1: Installing You need the installer to run the XP installation, and for doing so you need to set it in compatibility mode. First, go to my computer, right click on the CD drive and click 'Open' Then right click on VBoxWindowsAdditions-x86 if your guest is x86/32 bit or VBoxWindowsAdditions-amd64 if your guest is x64, and click properties.
Click on other properties and select 'compatibility' (Longhorn betas) or the compatibility tab (Vista betas) Now check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' and, in the menu underneath, choose 'Windows XP' Click OK and then launch the installer again by selecting the right exe. If you now try to select Direct3D the Windows XP dialog will pop up which is a good sign. Proceed with the installation and, on every dialog that pops up, click 'Yes' or 'Continue Anyway' Wait and. Click finish to reboot the VM. STEP 2: Putting everyting in compatibility mode After the VM rebooted, press Windows Key+R, type in 'C: Program Files Oracle VirtualBox Guest Additions' (without quotes) and strike Enter. You should see this folder: Locate any exe in the folder and set compatibility mode to Windows XP as before, especially for VBoxTray.exe. Keep the folder open.
STEP 3: Adding VBoxTray.exe to run at startup Now, at least in my tests, for some reason VBoxTray.exe won't run at startup even if there's a voice in msconfig, so let's add it manually. Go to Start, All programs, right click on Startup and choose 'Open'.
Then, go back to VirtualBox Guest Additions folder, right click on VBoxTray and select copy. Go to startup folder and choose 'Paste Shortcut'. Now reboot the VM, when it starts up try to resize the window, and if it changes resolution then CONGRATULATIONS, you installed the Guest Additions on Longhorn!! BUILDS I'VE SUCCESFULLY TESTED ✔Build 3683 ✔Build 4029 ✔Build 4051 x86 ✔Build 4074 x86 ✔Build 5048 x86 BUILDS I CAN'T TEST/NOT WORKING ✘Build 4011 (corrupted Windows setup) ✘Build 4051 x64 (Installer: execution returned exit code: -) BUILDS THAT NEED SOME WORKAROUND ●Build 4039: Disable.Net explorer components. Go to system properties(right click 'My Computer' and click properties) - advanced - Settings button under performance.
Then uncheck 'show preview and filters in folder' under the visual effects tab. Will disable the explorer prettiness, but it'll do. Then set XP compatibility mode (original suggestion by yourepicfailure) NOTE: I'M NOT GOING TO TEST EVERY SINGLE LEAKED BUILD, BUT I'LL TEST THE ONES WITH THE MOST CHANGES AND GRADUALLY UPDATE THE LIST As previously said, I moved to VMWare Hope this was helpful, if there are any errors, suggestions or if you need any help, leave a post below! The weekend before you posted this, I had the exact same idea.
I managed to do exactly what you did the previous week. I installed the Guest Additions using the XP Compatibility settings and I was gonna make a post about this, but seems you beat me to the punch!
I was pretty surprised about this, but there is ONE more thing. This game here is Touhou 13: Ten Desires. It normally requires DirectX 9 to work. Getting the guest additions installer to work in safemode is pretty much impossible with my current skill set, but there is a way around to do this that I will get to in another post (unless you beat me to it xD). Of course, I tested this with Aero and sadly, it doesn't work. All I get is a black screen, probably has to do with the fact that the early versions of aero are using some kind of call not present in the WINE drivers VirtualBox uses. Also, anyone have any tips on getting audio to sound good and not super choppy in VirtualBox?
I'd like to know. The weekend before you posted this, I had the exact same idea. I managed to do exactly what you did the previous week.

Sorry XD By the way, you're right, compatibility mode just won't work in Safe Mode, but if you want you can post it here and I'll merge with my post to create a single resource (of course I'll credit you). Another thing: by the Aero not working, do you mean the pre or post reset build? I'm not home until evening but then I'll test with two post-reset builds with Aero. By the way, how did you get Longhorn to work with the current date and time?
In fact, it is very hard to get it to work on a later year than 2005. Win7 Winlogon Patch + TweakNT. 4074 can be installed at any BIOS date, but otherwise very easy.
There was no released operating system called LongHorn. LongHorn was a code name for a development project. If you have something actually called LongHorn then it's either stolen or an alpha, and in both cases all bets are off. I notice that the ISO is in a folder called 'Torrents'. As to using something other than 16 color mode or the current palette, it should just be a matter of configuring the display settings and display theme. Even better would be to install the GAs. Even better would be to install the GAs. I can't install GAs. At the end I get an ERROR 0000065b function failed error. GTA Vice City Games. With exit code 2.
